I like to look for better ways of doing things, rather than following the "this is the way we have always done it" approach.
Traditionally the gap between windows and framed openings have been filled with expanding foam. While foam may be quick it is messy stuff and needs some skill to apply properly.
I have seen fibre insulation used around windows in the northern hemisphere, either glass wool or Rockwool are used. But really there is only one wool and that grows on a sheep.
At my Avonhead high performance home I used wool and the client who was on the tools for the build installed it around the windows and found it straightforward.
Therefore, when it came to insulating the windows to my own bach at Castle Hill I decided to give it a go myself.
Brad Stuart at Terra Lana Products Ltd. supplied some wool off cut and I set too indulating around my windows.
It was a real pleasure working with wool and I never want to touch glass fibre again.
The windows details include an external weather tightness tape Pro Clima NZ Ltd CONTEGA EXO, interior air tightness is TESCON VANA. Therefore the wool is simply insulation as air tightness is dealt with using tapes.
If you want to build a high performance home with a difference come talk to me.
