TIMBER ACOUSTIC CEILING

The timber acoustic ceilings at my Avonhead high performance home are well underway.

The young guys on site from John Garlick Builders are rightfully proud of what they have achieved.

The NZ Beech timber has lots of variety in both colour and grain. There are some knots and pin holing which some would consider defects. However, the clients and I weren't after a monotone look. The timber is 135mm X 12mm and it has been seasoned and stored correctly but there is some cupping which is to be expected. The decision was made to have an 8mm gap between the boards at both the edge and butt joints. This really adds to the look and mitigates the cupping. The ceiling has had one clear coat and this has really brought the colour and grain out.

The build up is as follows:
SIP roof by Formance
Acoustic insulation Terra Lana Products Ltd. 35mm wool batt custom cut installed to underside of SIP.
Steel suspended ceiling grid by RONDO engineered with bracing necessary when ceiling lining is not a sheet material with edge restraint.
Timber batten 45mm X 20mm fixed to steel ceiling batten to allow timber to timber fixing of the battens.
Black scrim to hide the structure and services.
Beech timber fixed with a brader.
