SKETCH MODELS

What are they?

Sketch models are like free hand sketch drawings but in 3D form. Sketch models are quick and cheap to make.

What are they used for?

Sketch models are used to test ideas. They are often made at the very early stages of design but can be made at any stage to investigate the whole or parts of a building.

Having prepared a sketch plan for a backcountry hut project I wanted to look at various long elevation options. Initial thoughts are that the different forms will suit different landscapes such as bush, river flat, alpine or coastal. The cladding colours would be selected to suit these environments. This safety orange colour scheme is a traditional colour for alpine huts above the bushline to make them more visible in low light or bad weather.

Apart from assisting in the design process these models are great for helping the client understand the design and to decide on their preferred option.

If you are interested in working with an architect who makes models and has a passion for designing buildings in New Zealands amazing landscapes let's chat.

I am Graeme Jacobs a Christchurch based architect specialising in residential projects both high performance homes character home alterations SIP PREFAB and back country huts.
