IMPORTANCE OF RECORDING BUILT LANDSCAPES THROUGH TIME

The Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu as a great exhibition on at the moment titled "From Here On The Ground", featuring 20th Century Aotearoa New Zealand artists exploring Urban, Suburban and Industrial landscapes.

This exhibition will appeal to many but perhaps especially to Architects as it features the built environment we spend our lives working on.

Of real appeal to me was images of part of Christchurch that no longer exist due to demolition and not just post earthquake. The image I have included is Manchester Street by Louise Henderson. The paintings are a reminder of how much heritage we have lost and at the same time our sense of place. Also interesting was the paintings of Napier after their earthquake, it made me wonder where are the paintings depicting the Canterbury Earthquakes?

It is critical that artists be they painters, drawers or photographer's capture the built landscape through time so we can record our history and perhaps learn something for the future.
